I'm not going to bother with this silly "homecoming" event. You may have your fun, but I won't be a part of it. Thank you very much.
Also, if you're a tailor, seamstress, or anything of the like - may I have a moment of your time? I'd like to put in a request for something to be made.
[ Action | Church ]
[ A few days after music class with Austria, Diana has decided to practice a few pieces of varying music either in the auditorium of the high school, right in the music room, or hell - even in the church. She's not religious by any means, but she will make use of what she has to her. And, so, she can be found at the organ in the church, playing this piece. It's honestly a challenge to her, but it's a welcome one. Go ahead and bother her, but try to not interrupt her from her playing. She's very intently focused on this. ]
[ Action | Mayfield High ]
[ While Diana's in her classes, she's busy scribbling down not the notes, but yet transmutation circles. She's making herself learn new ones as well as applying the knowledge she already has. She's humming a little song under her breath, her eyes closed. At least she isn't falling randomly asleep. Yet. ]
[ Action | Around Mayfield ]
[ Maybe school or the church is not for you, so Diana can be found bustling in various shops to buy posterboard and other such materials. While she'd like to design her posters on a computer, she doesn't have that option available to her, unfortunately. Again, she'll make do with what she has for now. She does seem to be a little distracted as she's figuring out how to design the posters to make them visually pleasing and invite as many people as possible, though. Therefore, it should be easy to distract her from doing this. ]

Well, show me what you've got.
[Because he knows there is no way Diana hasn't started experimenting with different variations of circles. You're too much like him when it comes to learning new things.]

[ She opens her notebook and there are sketches of various circles and runes, all extremely detailed with different kinds of notes attached to them. There's a few earth-based circles and also a few more that dabble into other elements.
In addition to that, she's also begun her own take of her code since she observed his own notes briefly. It's based in a complicated chemical code with some symbols thrown in for good measure. ]
What do you think?

He pulls the notebook towards him and leans forward, keeping his head propped up with his right hand as he looks everything over carefully. Very carefully. He takes his time going over each circle and reading through her notes. His expression is strangely unreadable, but when he lifts his eyes to look at her the only thing there is a smile.]
Color me impressed.
[He pulls out his own notebook, starting to draw out some of the circles in her notes.]
The earth-based ones are flawless and this -- [he points to one of the circles in her notebook] -- this is actually pretty advanced stuff. The detail work here is incredible, really. Most people have trouble learning where to place all of these and they end up creating some huge, convoluted atrocity that's half as effective as they intended.
But then again, we both know you're not most people.
What you did here was condense a fairly complex circle into something that's not only easier to draw out and remember, but you've done it in such a way that if you were to actually use this, the flow of energy would be incredibly simple to control. This is the kind of stuff you want to go for -- simple, balanced circles.
[He shoves his notebook over to her. Ed had copied down her versions of the non-earth based circles and under them, drew his own. For the most part both versions are the same, but he condensed a couple, removing unnecessary links and runes and the others just had some minor mistakes.]
You did really well on those, too and don't think I didn't notice that some of those runes weren't ones I taught you. Not that it's a bad thing. There's some pretty obvious patterns that some of the base elements follow and you made the logical next step.
Nice work.

Thank you, Ed. [ Her tone lightens up from the usual droll one she has when addressing and conversing with people when he says that and she can feel her excitement starting to crop up. ]
I wanted to show you that I meant I was serious about this and I challenged myself to do just that. So, it means a lot.

[There's a moment of silence in which his smile fades a little, brows furrowing.]
So have you given any more thought to what I talked about last time? "One is all. All is one"?
no subject
Yes. With the life I have, I shouldn't waste it so carelessly. I should be who I am, but yet be cautious, and try to be the best I can be. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
It's a very valuable lesson, Ed.
no subject
Good. I'm glad to hear that, really.
[He hesitates a moment, before closing up his notebook and shoving it off to the side.]
Look, before I teach you anything else, there's a few things we need to talk about.
no subject
All right. Go for it.
[ She has a feeling that it's serious, so she's readying herself for whatever he has to throw at her. ]
no subject
Tell me, can you think of another reason that phrase is so important to alchemy? What d'you think it means in practice?
no subject
Don't try to control life or death. Everyone must return to the earth sometime in their life, and when it happens, you can't cheat death. Once that person is gone, they are gone. But, you can still keep them "living", so to speak, by keeping their legacy that they left behind alive and use that for solace in your time of need.
[ Again, her voice sounds older than it should be for a thirteen year old, but she knows that this is a serious topic and she doesn't want to screw anything up with her lessons. ]

Among alchemists there is only one taboo, just one thing you are never to attempt no matter the reason... and that's human transmutation. Alchemy should never be used to try to bring someone back to life. Never.
[There is no doubt that Ed means business. He is deadly serious about this, there's weight behind every word, his voice remaining even and calm, his face reveals none of the disgust he feels as he speaks.
Because he did try to do this, despite everything that Izumi taught him, Ed and Al still thought they were above it all.]
no subject
You have my word, as your friend and as your student, that I will never attempt human transmutation no matter the reason. I understand that the circumstances are grave if I do.
[ Like Ed, she means business with her own words. She, too, remains even and calm and knows that this is something she should never, ever do. ]

Alchemy can be beautiful. It can create amazing things and do so much good for the world, but it can just as easily tear it down. You need to remember that and you need to start pacing yourself. You're smart, brilliant, even and I know you're careful and I know that you're serious about this, but that zeal for knowledge can make a person careless.
One tiny little mistake can cause a massive rebound. One wrong connection, one wrong line, one misplaced rune. That's it.
no subject
And, I will also learn to pace myself. Taking on too much at once would be rather careless, wouldn't it?
[ Not that it ever stopped her before from knowing everything on a subject, but hey - she's changed her ways and motives this much. Who's to say that she can't add this on along with it? Still, she gives Ed a firm nod to show just how serious she is about alchemy and everything that goes on with it. ]

Don't want to overwork yourself.
[He looks back down at his hands and takes a short breath, hesitating slightly as he calms his nerves]
It's strange, I keep forgetting that you don't know anything about Amestris. You know, I'm actually in the military back home.
no subject
[ It's true. She's heard of the name before, sure, but there has to be a reason why she keeps on hearing it. ]
Was it your choice or did you have to enlist?
no subject
Amestris is the country I'm from. Right now it's still being governed by the military. [there's something in the way he says it that would lend someone to believe that this is changing. which it is.]
Alchemists are considered to be valuable government and military resources. If you have a speck of talent, they want you, but actually succeeding and becoming a state alchemist is pretty difficult. There's a written test, most people take it once or twice before earning a passing score, and a practical examination, too.
[Excuse him for a moment, because he's still pretty damn proud of this for a number of reasons.]
I joined when I was twelve. Easiest thing I've ever done.
no subject
I am happy that your country is having a revolution, Ed. And, heh... you're just as much of a prodigy as I am, huh?
[ At least she's smiling again. ]
no subject
What, you expected less? I'll have you know that I'm the youngest person in Amestrian history to become a State Alchemist.
